Planning a trip for the whole family is a different job from planning one for yourself. One child gets carsick after an hour, one parent can’t manage more than a few steps at a time, and someone always wants a pool while someone else wants a fort. Good family tour packages in India take that juggling off your plate: one price, one plan and a driver who knows the roads.
This guide explains what a package should include, the main types, how to choose, and 24 destinations with short itineraries, best months and realistic per-person prices. Treat the prices as a budgeting guide. Your final quote will depend on dates, hotel category and group size.
What Are Family Tour Packages in India?
A family tour package is a bundled holiday that combines accommodation, local transport, sightseeing and usually some meals into one price, planned around a group that includes children, parents or grandparents. Unlike a backpacker’s itinerary, it puts comfort first: shorter driving days, rooms that fit everyone and activities that work across ages.
Most family holiday packages in India include:
- A stay in family rooms, connecting rooms or a resort cottage
- Daily breakfast, and often dinner (check the meal plan)
- A private cab or tempo traveller with driver for transfers and sightseeing
- Sightseeing as per the itinerary, with a guide where needed
- Pickup and drop at the airport, railway station or bus stand
- Taxes, tolls, parking and driver allowance
Not usually included: flights or train tickets to the destination, monument and safari fees, lunches, adventure activities, tips and personal spending. Read this list before comparing quotes. A lower price often just means more has been left out.
Types of Family Holiday Packages in India
Packages differ in how they’re built, who they suit and what they cost. Knowing the categories stops you from comparing a shared-coach departure with a private, upgraded itinerary as if they were the same product.
| Package type | Best for | What you get | Cost per person per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget family tour packages | Short trips, tight budgets | 2–3-star hotels, breakfast, cab or shared transfers | ₹2,000–3,500 |
| Standard (mid-range) | Most families | 3-star hotels, private cab, breakfast and dinner | ₹3,500–6,000 |
| Premium and luxury | Milestone trips, anniversaries | 4–5-star resorts, private guides, curated experiences | ₹6,000–12,000+ |
| Fixed-departure group tours | Families happy with set dates | Coach travel, tour manager, shared itinerary | ₹2,500–5,000 |
| Customised private packages | Toddlers, seniors, multigenerational groups | Hotels, pace and stops built around your family | Priced to your plan |
By theme, domestic tour packages for families fall into five groups: hill stations, beaches and backwaters, heritage and culture, wildlife, and pilgrimage. The destination section below follows the same order. By traveller, three variations matter most:
- Family tour packages with young children: drives under four or five hours, a hotel with a pool or lawn, one main activity a day.
- Family tour packages for senior citizens: lift or ground-floor rooms, no long treks, wheelchair or battery-car access and a rest day mid-trip.
- Multigenerational trips: connecting rooms and split-day options, so teenagers can go rafting while grandparents visit a temple.
If your family doesn’t fit a standard mould, we can create customised family tour packages that suit your preferences instead of forcing a fixed itinerary to work.
How to Choose the Right Family Tour Package
- Plan around the slowest traveller. Pick the destination and daily driving that your youngest or oldest member can handle comfortably.
- Fix a per-person budget first, then keep 10–15% aside for entry tickets, lunches and add-on activities.
- Match the month to the place. Goa in June and Ladakh in January are both poor choices, however good the deal looks.
- Read the itinerary for driving hours, not attractions. More than five or six hours on the road a day is tiring with children.
- Ask four questions before paying: What is the child policy? Which meal plan is included? Are the hotels named? What is the cancellation and refund schedule?
- Check who you are buying from. The Best Travel Agency in India for your family is the one that shows hotel names, a written inclusion list and a clear refund policy before you pay, not the one with the loudest discount.
For train legs, book your tickets as soon as the booking window opens, which is usually 60 days before travel. For hill routes, check road and weather advisories close to departure.

How Much Do Family Tour Packages in India Cost?
Three things move the price more than the destination: season, hotel category and group size. A family of four sharing two adjoining rooms pays a different per-head rate from a couple. Ask for a quote that lists these costs, which are the ones families most often miss:
- Peak-season surcharge on festival weeks and school holidays
- Child policy: infants usually travel free, while children around 5–11 are charged with or without an extra bed. It varies by hotel.
- Entry and safari fees for places like the Taj Mahal, Ranthambore, Gir and Kaziranga
- Ropeways, gondolas and permits such as the Gulmarg gondola or Rohtang permit
- Houseboat or ferry upgrades in Kerala and the Andamans
- GST and card fees, which some quotes show separately
To keep costs sensible, travel in shoulder months (February–March and late September–October), book 45–60 days ahead, choose a well-reviewed three-star over a tired five-star, and cut one destination rather than rushing all of them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Booking a Family Holiday Package
- Packing in too many stops. Seven cities in seven days is a work trip, not a holiday. Two or three bases are plenty for most families.
- Choosing on price alone. A cheap quote often says “hotel or similar” and swaps in a weaker property. Ask for named hotels and recent reviews.
- Ignoring the vehicle. Five adults with luggage on a hill road need an SUV or tempo traveller, not a sedan.
- Leaving out ages. Quotes assume adults unless you say otherwise. Give children’s ages and any mobility limits upfront.
- Paying in full without refund terms. Get the cancellation schedule in writing before the advance.
Tips for Travelling With Kids and Senior Citizens
- Cap driving at five hours a day and add a buffer day before any flight home.
- Ask for lower-floor or lift-access rooms, and confirm it in writing.
- Carry ID for everyone. Hotels ask for ID even for children, so keep a school ID or birth certificate handy.
- Pack a small medical kit: ORS, motion-sickness tablets, regular prescriptions and copies of them. Take altitude medicine only on a doctor’s advice.
- Confirm meals in advance if you need Jain, vegetarian or child-friendly food, especially in remote places.
- Take travel insurance that includes medical and cancellation cover.

Start with the slowest traveller, pick the right month, read what the perfect holiday package includes, and the rest falls into place.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. What is the best family tour package in India for first-time travellers?
Ans: Kerala, the Golden Triangle, Goa and Manali–Shimla are the safest first picks. They have good hotels, short transfers and activities that suit both children and grandparents.
Q2. How much do family tour packages in India cost?
Ans: Most standard packages cost ₹7,000–₹40,000 per person, excluding flights or trains. Short trips like Goa or Pondicherry sit at the lower end; Andaman, Kashmir, Ladakh, multi-city Rajasthan and Char Dham cost more.
Q3. Are there family tour packages for senior citizens?
Ans: Yes. Ask for lift-equipped hotels, limited driving hours, wheelchair or battery-car support and a rest day. Kerala, Udaipur–Mount Abu, Pondicherry and Vaishno Devi with the helicopter option are easier choices.
Q4. When should I book a family holiday package in India?
Ans: Book 45–60 days ahead for Christmas–New Year, Diwali and summer holidays. Off-season trips can be booked three to four weeks out, while trains open around 60 days before travel.
Q5. Do children get discounted rates on family packages?
Ans: Usually. Infants often travel free, and children roughly aged 5–11 are charged a reduced rate with or without an extra bed. Policies differ by hotel, so get the child rate in writing.
Q6. Which family holiday packages in India work for a short weekend trip?
Ans: Goa, Pondicherry, Mussoorie–Rishikesh–Haridwar and Jim Corbett work well over two or three nights, as they need little travel time and have plenty for children to do.
Q7. Can I customise a family tour package?
Ans: Yes. You can change hotels, add or drop destinations, set the pace and request specific meals. A customised plan usually costs a little more than a fixed departure but fits your family better.
